REVIVING THE DANCE FLOOR

Remember when going out was really about dancing? Something has slowly disappeared from the way we gather in Lagos.

Dear friends,
There was a time when going out meant finding a good room, hearing good music, meeting people and dancing. The dance floor was the centre of the night.
Today, much of nightlife has reorganised itself around something else. Tables have become more valuable than the dancing bodies around them. VIP sections expand. Bottles arrive with dorime fireworks. Consumption itself becomes the performance, while the dance floor gets smaller and smaller.
But the death of the dance floor has greater consequences than we imagine.
We don't only lose somewhere to party. We lose one of the few places where strangers can meet without needing much from one another, where generations and social classes can share the same rhythm, where music is felt before it is measured, and where, for a few hours, we can step outside the roles we perform every day and simply inhabit our bodies.
WHY THE DANCE FLOOR?
I have spent nearly thirty years working with the body, first my own, and then with generations of dancers in four continents. Over time, I have come to understand that dance offers something much deeper than performance.
The body is an archive.
A storehouse of memories, desires, fears, habits, emotions and experiences that we don't always have language for. Sometimes the body knows long before the conscious mind can name what it knows. And sometimes, we simply need to dance.
Not for an audience. Not for Instagram. Not because we are good at it. Not because anyone is watching.
There is something extraordinary that happens when we are allowed to move with passion and abandon. We become more attentive to ourselves. We encounter other people differently. Inhibition loosens. Something opens.
For professional dancers, this is part of our practice. We repeatedly enter the studio to discover territories in the body we did not know were available to us.
Now, we would like to open that experience to everybody.
Because dance belongs to everybody.
INTRODUCING DANCEHOUSE
Every last Friday of the month, we are turning The QDance Center into one big dance floor. Somewhere between a rave, a nightclub and a Lagos Island rooftop party, DANCEHOUSE is six hours of music, movement, sweat, encounters and good energy.
No headliners and no pressure to perform.
You don't need to know any steps.
You don't need to be a professional dancer.
You don't even need to think you can dance.
If music moves you, you belong here.
Come after work. Come with friends. Come alone. Come dressed to sweat. Shake off the month, meet someone you might never otherwise meet, catch a groove, lose track of time and dance like nobody is watching.
No VIP. No spectators. No expensive tables. No segregation. No drugs.
Just dance music, movement, connection and good vibes.
THE DANCE FLOOR IS ALSO A MEETING PLACE
There is another reason this matters.
Dance floors have always been cultural laboratories.
Songs are tested there. Gestures appear there. Fashion travels there. Strangers encounter one another there. Musicians discover what moves a body long before an algorithm can tell them what is trending.
Lagos needs more of these rooms.
A healthy city needs spaces where generations, sounds, communities and ideas can collide. Where you don't need to buy an expensive table to belong. Where a 22-year-old and a 50-year-old can suddenly find themselves inside the same rhythm.
We want DANCEHOUSE to become one of those spaces.
Not another club.
Not another concert.
Not another performance.
Just a dance floor. A room where the main event is all of us.
